Firefox 88 and 78.10 ESR are already available for download [Update: Changelog]

Today Mozilla will distribute Firefox 88.0 and 78.10 ESR via the update function in the browser during the course of the day. But both can already be installed.

The most important change is that FTP is now deactivated by default. With Firefox 90 at the end of June, this function will be completely thrown out of the browser. Mozilla has already started testing the page isolation in Beta 88. Here, pages are executed in a sandbox. However, this function will not be available in the final version. Just as a note by the way for those who are also testing the beta.

If you miss the screenshot function in the address bar, you have to right-click in the tab bar -> Customize and add the icon for screenshots to the toolbar. Or right-click on the website is enough. We have already described the change to compact mode here.

Fluid zooming using a touchpad is now also supported on Linux under Wayland. Work has also continued on the PDF function. The PDF files also support embedded JavaScript so that interactive functions can be carried out. Certainly, security gaps will be closed in the new version. We will of course provide the complete list of changes.

And as a reminder: The next final version (Firefox 89) has been postponed by two weeks and is now dated May 31, 21. The reason is that the Firefox team has more time to devote to the new Proton design.

Changelog Firefox 88

New

  • PDF forms now support JavaScript embedded in PDF files. Some PDF forms use JavaScript for validation and other interactive functions.
  • Print updates: Margins are now also displayed in their size.
  • Fluid zooming with a touchpad is now supported on Linux.
  • To protect against cross-page data leaks, Firefox now isolates window.name data from the web page that created it.

Improved

  • Screen readers no longer mistakenly read content that web pages had visually hidden, such as: B. Articles in the Google Help Panel.

Changes

  • Firefox will no longer prompt you to access your microphone or camera if you have already granted access to the same device on the same webpage in the same tab within the last 50 seconds. This new grace period reduces the number of requests to grant device access.
  • The “Create screenshot” function has been removed from the “Page action” menu in the url bar. To take a screenshot, right-click to open the context menu. You can also add a screenshot shortcut directly to your toolbar from the Customize menu. Open the Firefox menu and select Customize ...
  • FTP support has been disabled and its complete removal is planned for an upcoming release. Addressing this vulnerability will reduce the chance of an attack while removing support for an unencrypted protocol.

Fixed security issues

  • In Firefox 88, 13 security problems were fixed which are classified as 5 with "High", 6 with "Moderate" and 2 with "Low".
