Windows 10 21H2 - The changes so far summarized

Since December 2020 we have been able to test 12 Insider versions so far. In the last few weeks, in particular, many new functions and visual changes have been added. Therefore, here is a summary of the current status.

The Windows 10 21H2 will be completed from the underground in June, after which the Windows team tinkers in the new functions and will distribute them to everyone in September / October. We explained it in more detail yesterday. Due to the many changes in the last few weeks some of them may have perished. Therefore, here is an overview. Not everything is set in stone.

Probably the most important visual change is the new icons for Windows 10. Microsoft really surprised us. Not even a leak in advance came through. If you want to take a look at the icons, you can download the package. In the comments, there is also a guide on how to use it now.

The icons in the settings have now also been changed. The new Segoe Fluent Icons font is used here instead of Segoe MDL2. We have already described the possibility of using these system icons to you.

We are currently working on the layout in File Explorer. Here the gaps between the entries are increased. But even that can be reset to the old view without any problems.

Another change is the news and interests in the system tray. This gives you the weather display in the system tray and the news when you open it. You can also deactivate this function very easily via the context menu of the taskbar. Although I have the feeling that the Redmond-based company also wants to port this function back into the Windows 10 21H1.

Speaking of the context menu, Microsoft has put some of it in the settings. We reported about it here.

A change has also been made in the start menu. The Windows Administrative Tools folder has now been renamed Windows Tools.

The apps have been cleaned up. Old apps are removed and new ones are added. The apps that are no longer included after a reinstallation are Paint 3D and the 3D Viewer. The context menu entries then of course also disappear. Accordingly, the 3D objects folder will no longer appear under “This PC” in the File Explorer.

For this, Windows Terminal and Power Automate Desktop are integrated as apps. The Windows Terminal is very practical and will gradually add many great functions. The notepad.exe was exchanged as the Win32 version for the app and this is now updated via the store. Another old relic that Microsoft has now removed.

Windows Sandbox and Microsoft Defender Application Guard now use improved container technology. Until now, the container runtime was adapted to the computer (Windows). That has now been changed so that both can start faster.

At the moment they are still working on the virtual desktops. Several virtual desktops can then be moved in the task view using drag & drop and the background image can also be changed. But we will have to wait and see whether the function still manages. Likewise with the changes to separate the taskbar from the shell and also to place the external drivers separately in a folder outside the Shell32 folder.

Those were the obvious changes so far. Of course, a lot of small changes have also been made. But that would be going too far now. After Microsoft has only integrated new functions for a long time, but hardly changed anything, this is finally being corrected from Windows 10 21H2 onwards. The Redmond-based company is tidying up, separating functions from the system, so that in the end we really have the pure system and everything else is separated from it. This should not only be an advantage for Microsoft and the upcoming updates. But it will all take a while to get the legacy issues out of the system.
