Title and further details of new Resident Evil movie revealed

Johannes Roberts, director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie, reveals other details about the project in addition to the title as part of the SXSW Gaming Awards. Accordingly, the film will not be a remake, but "something completely independent".

The newest film in the Resident Evil franchise will be titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) revealed this in a recent interview. As part of the SXSW Gaming Awards 2021, Roberts commented on his new project and revealed a few more details in addition to the title.

As the director confirmed to IGN, the latest film will adapt the plot of the first two video game parts. Accordingly, the film focuses on well-known characters such as Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, and Leon S. Kennedy.

New film not a remake

The story of Welcome to Raccoon City deals with the events of 1998 when the city was overrun by a zombie horde. Fans of the series get to see well-known locations such as the mansion or the police station. Regarding this, Roberts said, "It's a completely different genesis, based on the roots of the game and the world of horror." His vision will not be a remake of the previous Resident Evil films. Rather, the new project is a reboot. "I could never feel the terror and atmosphere of the games on the screen. That's something I want to convey (with the new film)."

The main roles in the film will be Kaya Scodelario (Crawl) as Claire Redfield, Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine, Robbie Amell (The Flash) as Chris Redfield, and Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double is Better) as Leon S. Kennedy take over. When Dr. Albert Wesker and Dr. William Birkin will be seen respectively Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) and Neal McDonough (Arrow). Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is slated for theatrical release on September 3, 2021.
