Windows 10: Microsoft stops "Emergency Update" rollout of KB5001649

Microsoft has paused the distribution of cumulative update KB5001649 for Windows 10. This means that the update, which was supposed to fix printer problems but could not be installed for many users, is currently no longer distributed via the Windows update function.

We only reported in detail yesterday about the problems that occurred with the KB5001649 update. The update was declared as an emergency update because it was supposed to fix serious problems (blue screen of death) as an unscheduled update. Now it looks like Microsoft's protective mechanism for the Windows update function is taking effect and the rollout will be slowed down after numerous problems have been reported. This is reported by the online magazine Windows Latest.

Microsoft stops rollout of KB5001649

Microsoft uses AI to deliver the updates. With the help of machine learning, for example, interventions should be quicker and, above all, more targeted when problems arise. For the KB5001649 update, this means that the distribution via the integrated Windows update function will be stopped, i.e. users who have not previously received the update will no longer be offered it.

This gives the Windows team time to find out whether the installation problems are due to a stop error in the build itself or whether there are compatibility problems with certain configurations. In order not to let other users tap into the problem, the update is no longer offered automatically.

Microsoft Update Catalog

However, the update itself has not been withdrawn: It is still available for download from the Microsoft Update Catalog. Even if it was already offered in the auto-update function but not used, it will still be displayed. The last March 2021 updates for the younger Windows 10 versions caused a complete mess when it comes to printing, with new problems appearing with each new update. Users should now wait for further updates. Microsoft had already announced before the weekend that it would provide further fixes as soon as possible.
