Serial Numbers, Keys, Generic Keys for Windows 10

If you want to install Windows 10, you can use the generic keys in addition to the correct keys. These are only suitable for installation, not for activating Windows 10.

Important: The generic keys serve as placeholders. If you have made an upgrade, these are displayed in the system. The correct activation takes place via the hardware ID of the computer, which is stored at Microsoft after the upgrade.

Important: If you want to install Windows 10 clean afterwards, entering the serial number is skipped during installation. It is not necessary to enter it again. During installation, Microsoft compares the activation online with the hardware ID and activates the system permanently.

This tutorial is suitable for Windows 10 2004 and above, 1909, 1903, 1809, and below.

Change Windows 10 Home to Pro

If you want to switch from Home to Pro after upgrading Windows 7, 8.1 or Windows 10, then you need to use the key for the installation:

• It can be an advantage to "cut" the internet.
• Then use your own pro key for activation.

Note: This only applies to the upgrade variants. If you have a Windows 10 Pro key, you can use it right away.

Who has to enter a key when reinstalling Windows 10

It is not necessary to enter the serial number during installation. Activation is regulated via the hardware ID:

• Upgrade from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10
• Purchased Windows 10 from the Windows Store
• Purchased Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro Upgrade from the Windows Store
• Windows 10 Insider Upgrade to the latest Windows 10 Insider

A serial number does not have to be entered.

• Bought a new device tablet, PC, laptop with pre-installed Windows 10
• The key is stored in the BIOS - the serial number does not have to be entered
• The serial number was supplied as a sticker or otherwise - the serial number must be entered during installation or afterwards.

New from build 10565 and then from November update 2015:

• When upgrading to Windows 10, it is no longer necessary to first install Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 in order to then upgrade. Then you can immediately install Windows 10 with the old key.
• From around August / September 2016, an installation with a Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 key is officially no longer possible.
• But still possible. The activation servers are still not switched off (as of December 2020) .

OEM key authorized to install Windows 10?

Anyone who owns a Windows 7 or Windows 8.x with an OEM key can quickly check whether the OEM key is suitable for installing Windows 10.

• Copy the command slmgr.vbs -dli into it and press Enter.

These keys are checked every 180 days via the respective server. If the server is offline, Windows 10 is no longer activated.

Switch between the Windows 10 versions

With Windows 10, Microsoft has simplified the change to a higher version (Pro, Education, Enterprise and back). We have outsourced the individual options. Change Windows 10 to a different version Home Pro Education Enterprise

Change Windows 10 Home to Pro

If you have installed Windows 10 Home, you can use a valid key to convert it to a Windows 10 Pro without having to reinstall. All settings and programs are retained. Only the new components are activated.

A Windows 10 ISO / DVD is required for this, if there is no installation medium that contains both versions, or at least Windows 10 Pro. But Microsoft provides the ISOs for this.

The methods listed below show how to do it.

Important for the 10586 (1511 November update). The home key is required in the BIOS.

A change from Home to Pro is possible here via a small detour.

• Windows 10 Home Start Menu -> Settings -> Windows Update and Security -> Activation
• Click on Change product key
• The generic key from above (currently still enter the VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T and switch to the Pro
• When everything is done, enter the Windows 7 or 8.x Pro Key and Windows 10 will be activated as Pro.

Change Windows 10 Pro to Windows 10 Education

If you have an education key, but no ISO or data carrier, you can proceed differently.

• Download Windows 10 Pro and install it without entering a serial number (skip).
• Then start menu -> Settings -> Windows Update and Security -> Activation
• Click on Change product key
• Enter the Windows 10 Education key and upgrade to this version.

Windows 10 online change the key

• Open settings in the start menu, or just press Win + i
• Click on Updates and Security
• Activation on the left
• Now click on the change product key and enter it in the new window.

Or:

• Press Win + R
• Enter slui 3 and start. (Don't forget spaces)
• Enter the product key and Windows will now activate the new key.

Windows 10 activate the key by phone (offline)

If it happens that Windows 10 is not activated automatically, you can also activate it offline, or better said by phone.

And so it goes:

• Press Win + R
• Enter slui 4 and start
• Now select the country in the new window and follow the instructions.
• It is best to have a piece of paper and a pen ready to write down the number given.

Windows 10 activate the key after changing the hardware

With Windows 10 1607, Microsoft introduced a new method so that you can reactivate your Windows 10 when you change hardware, such as motherboard, CPU, etc.

Microsoft has now removed hard drives from the hardware replacement. Means you can change as many hard drives as you want.

If you have a digital license under Settings -> Update and Security Links then Activation, you should make sure that this digital license is connected to a Microsoft account BEFORE changing the hardware.

After changing the hardware, you can then select your device and restore the activation.

Activate Windows 10 with the cmd prompt

Another variant is the command prompt with slmgr.vbs

• Enter command prompt or cmd.exe in the search on the taskbar and right-click "As administrator" or hold down the Ctrl + Shift key .
• Enter the command slmgr.vbs -ipk your serial number and press Enter
• Example slmgr.vbs -ipk 6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF
• Then slmgr.vbs -ato This command activates Windows 10 when you are connected to the Internet.

Windows 10 should now be activated (after a restart) and show it under Control Panel / System or Settings / System / Info.

Remove Windows 10 Key to enter a new key

If you have activated Windows 10 with the wrong key, you can easily undo it. For this you need the command prompt.

Enter command prompt or cmd.exe in the search on the taskbar and right-click "As administrator" or hold down the Ctrl + Shift key.

• Enter the command slmgr.vbs -upk and start it.
• This will remove the previous serial number from Windows 10.

If you want to remove the old key (serial number) from the registry beforehand, then you give the command:

• Enter command prompt or cmd.exe in the search on the taskbar and right-click "As administrator" or hold down the Ctrl + Shift key.
• Enter the command slmgr.vbs -cpky and start it.

Now you can with the above commands

• slmgr.vbs -ipk your serial number - enter the key into the system and with
• slmgr.vbs -ato activate the system.

That's it already.

Message Disable automatic activation Windows 10

If you have performed Windows 10 offline, i.e. without an Internet connection and without entering a serial number (key), you will be prompted to activate Windows 10 after the installation.

If you only want to try for a few days whether Windows 10 is running well on your computer, you can easily deactivate this message.

And so it goes:

• Press Win + R, enter regedit and start.
• To the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ SoftwareProtectionPlatform \ Activation
• In the right field double click on Manual and change the value from 0 to 1.
• Restart now.

Note: Windows 10 Home or Pro is not a trial version. The conditions clearly state that you are only authorized to use Windows 10 if you also have a serial number.

Upgrade from Windows 10 Home to Windows 10 Pro

In the previous versions it was still about adding programs and features / features.

If you have installed Windows 10 Home and now want to switch to Windows 10 Pro, you can do that very easily.

Requirement: Valid key for Windows 10 Pro and a Windows 10 ISO if none is available.

It is also possible to install in advance with the generic key and then activate with the correct Windows 10 key.
