Google AI creates new "Nirvana song" - that's behind it

As early as 2016, Google presented an exciting project with an AI called Magenta, with which music and visual arts can be created by machine. Now, with the help of Magenta and the Lost Tapes project, a song was created that was written entirely in the style of Nirvana.

The "Lost Tapes of the 27 Club" project is about showing which songs were lost to the world through the early deaths of artists such as Amy Winehouse, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix or Kurt Cobain. As a first step, the Google AI called Magenta analyzed the style of the musicians - which is not an easy undertaking. Then, in the second step, a song was created in each case, which is then built on the basis. The music magazine Rolling Stone now draws attention to the project of the 27 club.

This project aims to attract attention

The project is not only about creating similar songs with an AI, but also about advocating for people and especially for artists with mental health problems.

It says: "As long as there is popular music, musicians struggle with mental health problems to a far greater extent than the general population. This problem has not just been ignored. It has been romanticized by things like the club of 27 - a group of musicians who all lost their lives at the age of 27. To show the world what was lost through such mental health crises, Over The Bridge, an organization that gives musicians the chance to master their lives, has artificial intelligence used to create the album the club of 27 never had a chance to make.

Through this album, we're encouraging more music industry insiders to get the support they need so they can continue to make the music we all love in the future. Because even AI will never replace the real thing. Learn more at https://losttapesofthe27club.com/."

Difficult learning phase, but successful

Nirvana proved to be one of the more difficult artists for the AI to approach the style. While an artist like Hendrix would often build songs like "Purple Haze" and "Fire" with easily definable riffs, Cobain often played chunky, punky chord progressions that confused the computers.

So far, a total of four "new songs" have been created. In addition to Nirvana, there are songs in the style of The Doors, Jimi Hendrix and Amy Winehouse:
