A big change is expected next week concerning Windows 10. After several years of good and loyal service, Microsoft Edge will draw its benchmark.

This is not a surprise because Microsoft announced it some time ago. The first version of Microsoft Edge, the one that works with the EdgeHTML engine, will be discontinued. Microsoft has plans to permanently remove it from its operating system. The goal is to focus on Edge Chromium available in different environments ranging from Windows 10 to Linux through macOS.

The meeting is set for March 9th. Microsoft Edge Legacy will be the target of its latest security update. So the big maintenance for the month of April will only focus on Edge Chromium. On this subject,     Microsoft explains

“To replace this out-of-support browser, we are announcing that the new Microsoft Edge will be available as part of a Windows 10 cumulative security update scheduled for April 13, 2021.”

Note that this date refers to Patch Tuesday in April 2021. The giant adds

“When you apply this update, Microsoft Edge Legacy out of media will be removed and the new version of Microsoft Edge will be installed. The new Microsoft Edge offers built-in security and our best interoperability with the Microsoft security ecosystem while being more secure than Chrome for businesses on Windows 10. ”

This important change will be made automatically through the Windows Update service. So the operation will normally be transparent. Microsoft explains that if the Chromium version is already present on the machine, the update in question will only remove the old version.

Finally, the EdgeHTML engine will not be abandoned because applications use it. He will continue to be cared for in the future.
