20 years of Gothic: Classic receives patch and steam page for remake

Gothic has become more present again for its 20th birthday. In line with the occasion, THQ Nordic is providing new information on the planned remake and a patch for the classic released in 2001, which includes fan modifications and thus increases compatibility.

The remake now has a Steam page with five new screenshots that show an impression of the now gloomy game world. The first playable prototype did not meet with undivided approval, players had requested a more faithful remake in autumn 2019. THQ Nordic is now developing this, although the combat system that was criticized at the time is to be revised. A studio that can be entrusted with the task has also been set up in the meantime. Alkimia Interactive works in Barcelona and aims to become an expert in role-playing games, the publisher revealed on Twitter, indicating long-term plans.

Fan patch for the classic

The classic was also polished for the birthday. The “System Pack”, which is less than a megabyte in size, has it all: Among other things, it improves the graphics, adds support for high resolutions, allows the interface to be scaled accordingly and ensures that Gothic 1 can handle modern Windows versions. The System Pack is automatically delivered with Gothic, but the original can still be obtained unchanged. It is available on Steam in the properties under the "Original" branch.

Until the remake, fans have the opportunity to pass the time with very similar games. Even if Piranha Bytes is no longer working on the brand, the studio has constantly modernized the formula created in 2001 and used it in other titles. The Risen series is just as "Gothic" as Elex (test) in terms of feel - and without modern fabric softener with all corners and edges as well as hardness and tricky abbreviations. The same charm and character that make Piranha Bytes products so appealing are already available in a prettier and improved form.
