Sony may add an extra SSD port on PlayStation 5 as early as the second half

PlayStation 5 arrived, saw, and won, and almost without much effort, as it is one of the most desired consoles by gamers. It comes equipped with powerful technologies that offer the player an experience with sensations increasingly closer to reality.

However, the PS5's internal storage capacity was one of the points criticized by consumers. Thus, Sony should add an extra SSS port to its next-generation console in the second half of 2021.

As we know, Sony's PlayStation 5 has about 667 GB of available SSD capacity for storing games, applications, and other files.

However, this detail gave rise to some criticism from consumers, since, for example, only the Call of Duty game needs 133 GB of space for its installation. And other great titles always occupy at least 40 GB. But this problem may have a solution in a few months.

Sony can add an extra SSD port on PS5

Sony is preparing to bring updates to the internal storage of the PlayStation 5 as early as next semester.

According to data from sources informed on this subject to the Bloomberg website, the addition of support for additional drivers should happen through a firmware update. This update will also unlock higher cooling fan speeds to ensure that the console does not overheat.

The sources asked not to be identified, as these plans have not yet been officially made public.

The PS5's custom architecture speeds uploading and processing times but makes it impossible to connect an external hard drive, the common way for players to add more storage.

However, after the possible firmware update, players only need to remove a plastic cover from the PlayStation 5 and insert a new storage unit.

According to a Sony spokesperson:

As previously announced, we are working to enable the expansion of PlayStation 5 M.2 SSD storage. The moment has not been announced and details will be released later.

PS5 sales are on the rise and certainly with the expansion of SSD capacity gamers will have even more reasons to buy this console.
