Black Panther director to make Wakanda series for Disney +

With the success of WandaVision, Disney + was expected to announce more Marvel series. This time, however, what draws attention is not the return of some character, but the director Ryan Coogler, of Black Panther, who would already be developing a series about the Kingdom of Wakanda for the streaming service.

This is just one of the projects of the Black Panther universe that was conceived by the filmmaker for Disney and more news should be on the way. Although only the Wakanda series was released, the company signed an exclusive five-year contract for the production of TV content with Coogler's producer, Proximity Media.

Disney + did not disclose details about the new series, but speculation already points to a prequel to Black Panther. Whether the rumors are right or wrong is difficult to say, especially after the impact of WandaVision, which brought a completely different approach to what fans had seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) until then.

In an official statement, Bob Iger, the executive president of The Walt Disney Company, said that “Ryan Coogler is a unique storyteller, whose vision and reach have made him one of the leading filmmakers of his generation.” The statement recognizes Black Panther as a true social phenomenon and landmark of the MCU, which can be a guarantee that the series must remain true to the legacy of the first film.

Iger also said that, with Black Panther, "Ryan brought an innovative story and iconic characters to life in a real, meaningful and memorable way, creating a watershed cultural moment." While the statement may sound like a formality and resemble so many other ads, the speech of the Disney boss also sounds reassuring, ensuring that Black Panther remains the icon it is considered today.

Currently, Ryan Coogler is in pre-production for Black Panther II, as well as being involved with the drama Wrong Answer and the series Scenes for Minors.
