WSL2: Community Preview brings Ubuntu 21.04 to Windows 10

The Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL2) makes it possible to use different Linux distributions under Windows 10. With a new Community Preview, Canonical has now made numerous functions from Ubuntu 21.04 available for the Redmond operating system.

So far only versions with long-term support are available

Although Ubuntu is one of the most popular distributions for the Linux subsystem, Canonical has only provided Long-Term Support (LTS) versions for Windows 10 so far. The latest build for the WSL2 is an LTS version of Ubuntu 20.04 released in April 2020. Experimental versions, however, have not existed so far.

New preview based on Ubuntu 21.04

The so-called "Ubuntu on Windows Community Preview" uses a developer preview for the upcoming Ubuntu release 21.04 as a basis. Many features that are to be rolled out with the Linux distribution developed under the code name "Hirsute Hippo" are already included in the preview version. In addition to the terminal tool "ubuntuwsl", which manages the Ubuntu and WSL settings, the Community Preview contains a new installation program that is based on Subiquity and allows the user to specify the most important options the first time it is started.

Since the Community Preview is only an experimental Ubuntu version, the build should not be used in production environments. The software can be downloaded from the official Microsoft Store. However, access is only possible via this link. The Community Preview cannot be found via search.
