SHA-2 will only be used by Microsoft from May 9, 2021

Briefly informed: Microsoft has now announced that from May 9th, 2021 they will only use the more secure SHA-2 algorithm for all important Microsoft processes and services.

Windows 10 has only been using the SHA-2 algorithm for a long time. If you are traveling with Windows 7, you need an update so that the latest updates can also be installed. Because all downloads offered have been changed since August 2020. This completes the changeover process that began in 2019.

The reason for this is that the SHA-1 (Secure Hash Algorithm 1) was classified as insecure due to the security gaps found. Microsoft itself assumes “that the expiry of the SHA-1 certificate will be uneventful". All major applications and services have been tested and we have carried out a comprehensive analysis of possible problems and corrective actions.
