PS5 box hides secrets you probably haven't realized

It is its commitment to the environment, Sony explains how it has improved the PS5 packaging that is fully recyclable, and how the packaging of the future for consoles and games could change.

More and more companies are joining the environmental commitment initiative, and the technology giant Sony has been launching products on the market with fully recyclable materials and packaging for years, and the PS5 packaging could not be an exception.

Sony Interactive Entertainment, in an official publication on their blog, has wanted to let us know that the packaging of PS5 is fully recyclable, and also to anticipate that European users will begin to receive a new packaging more committed to the environment for games. They comment that in the last 50 years the use of plastic in the world has multiplied by 20, while the recycling rate remains extremely low, around 9%.

So in 2020, Sony Corporation launched an initiative called Green Management 2025 with a commitment to eliminate the use of plastic in newly designed small product packaging by 2025 and reduce the amount of plastic packaging by 10% for other types of products. . Today, as part of this initiative, they want to focus on the packaging of PlayStation 5, a breakthrough from what we saw on PS4.

Now they have unveiled the materials used for the packaging of the PS5 and also that of the accessories that are designed to be completely recyclable. However, they claim that PS5 packaging per unit is between 93-99% plastic-free overall.

These are all the improvements they want to put into action to achieve a totally plastic-free commitment for the future:

  • Design packaging to be fully recyclable
  • Avoid plastic or polystyrene trays by using card inserts and paper pulp trays
  • Replacement of plastic cable ties with paper ties
  • Disposal of protective plastic bags used for cables and instruction manuals
  • Replacing plastic wrap with closed card boxes for accessories

They also anticipate that throughout this year, they will test the inclusion of recycled polypropylene from post-industrial waste in the boxes of physical games in European territory, so it is likely that we will see some difference very soon when buying the next titles for PS5.
