Free upgrade to Windows 10 for Windows 7 SP1 and 8.1 users

Windows 7 support has ended

For Windows 7 and 8.1 users, the planned one-year free upgrade period to Windows 10 officially ended on July 29, 2016.

However, using the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant, which is still available for download from official servers, anyone can still upgrade to Windows 10 for free, but only to Windows 10 (version 1709).

However, at the moment, you can immediately update to the latest current version of Windows 10 October 2020 Update (version 20H2) using the Media Creation Tool. In this case, the new Windows system will be automatically activated with a digital license.

The necessary conditions

  • The free upgrade is available only for licensed users of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1.

To take advantage of the free upgrade offer, follow these steps:

1. For a smooth installation, you need to install all the latest updates for your current system. Also, make sure Windows 10 is right for your computer.

2. Download the new version of the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool, with which you can upgrade your Windows 7 SP1 or 8.1 operating system to Windows 10 for free.

3. Run the utility and accept the license agreement.

5. Wait while the utility downloads all necessary files check your computer for compatibility and downloads all necessary updates. This may take some time depending on the speed of your internet connection.

6. Next, make sure Keep personal files and applications are selected and click Install.

7. The update may take from one to several hours depending on the configuration of your computer.

8. After completing the update, Windows 10, version 20H2 will be installed.

Advice. To quickly find the version number of Windows 10, type in the search bar winver, press Enter, and you will see a dialog box with information about the current version of the OS.

9. Connect to the Internet and check the activation of the system. Press the Windows + keys I to open the Settings app and go to Update & Security> Activation. You should see that Windows is activated with a digital license.
