An overview of the new Workspaces feature in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge will receive a new feature called Workspaces. Workspaces simplify the management of open sites by grouping them according to tasks.

The new functionality is already being tested in Microsoft Edge Canary, but only a few users are automatically enabled.

However, there is a way to force the activation of "Workspaces". To do this, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to the Microsoft Edge Canary shortcut or create one using the context menu.
  • Right-click on the shortcut and select the Properties menu item.
  • In the Object to path separated by a space field, add a parameter --enable-features=msWorkspaces, for example:

"C: \ Users \ tekfiz \ AppData \ Local \ Microsoft \ Edge SxS \ Application \ msedge.exe" --enable-features = msWorkspaces

  • Click OK.

After that, when you launch the browser using this shortcut, the Workspaces icon will appear in the upper right corner of the screen. When you click on the icon, a description of the function and a button for creating a new work area are displayed.

You can specify the stage name and color. All open tabs in the browser will be moved to the work area. Additional workspaces open with a new tab in a separate window, while all existing workspaces remain open.

You can use each work area like a normal browser window. Microsoft Edge remembers workspaces when you close a window. This way, you can reopen the workspace at any time, even after your browser session has completely ended. The next time you launch the browser, a blank instance outside the workspace will open by default.

In other words: Edge remembers the sites and tabs open in the workspace and gives users the ability to launch them at any time. Workspaces can also be deleted, which will permanently delete them.

Most likely, in the near future, Microsoft Edge will support two tab management features: workspaces for organizing windows with collections of sites and tab groups for grouping tabs displayed in a window.

The very idea of workspaces is not new. Opera introduced similar functionality back in February 2020 with the release of Opera 67. Microsoft's implementation is different but generally works the same.

Many popular browsers are now adding new features for managing tabs: groups, containers, and workspaces. The Workspaces feature in Microsoft Edge is great for users who need to access the same resources on a regular basis for specific tasks.

What do you think of the Workspaces feature?
