Windows Server 2022: Microsoft announces further details

Microsoft has now given the first information about the upcoming Windows Server 2022. As part of Ignite 2021, the company will present various innovations in the new operating system for servers. A corresponding preview version can already be tried out now.

Microsoft's Windows Server 2022 includes, among other things, new security functions such as Secured Core Server and Secure Connectivity. According to the company, the Secured Core Server provides powerful protection against threats and offers multi-layered security across hardware, firmware, and the operating system. The Trusted Platform Module 2.0 and the System Guard are used here. Among other things, this is intended to minimize the possibility of exploiting weak points in the firmware. In addition, VBS (virtualization-based security), as well as Credential Guard, and HVCI (Hypervisor-protected code integrity), have been integrated.

Secured Connectivity introduces an additional level of security. Windows Server 2022 improves connection security through HTTPS and TLS 1.3 activated by default. In addition, SMB can now be encrypted with AES-256.

There are also new hybrid functions with Microsoft's Azure cloud service. With Azure Arc, users can manage Windows servers. Among other things, Azure Policy or Azure Monitor can be used. In the Windows Admin Center, however, the connection to Azure Arc must first be activated in order to use these functions. The Admin Center v2103 has also been given a new coat of paint. According to Microsoft, the management of virtual machines has been improved and the event display has been simplified. The Windows admin center is also available in the Azure portal.

Windows Server 2022 also supports applications such as SQL servers that require 48 TB of storage and 2,048 logical cores on 64 physical sockets.
