Windows 10: OEMDRIVERS as a new storage location for external drivers

Interesting story. Microsoft is not only in the process of separating the taskbar from explorer.exe but is also in the process of creating a new storage location for external drivers.

In the new Insider there is a hidden function that changes the storage location for external drivers, but leaves the native drivers in the Windows \ System32 \ DriverStore \ FileRepository folder. The new location is then Windows \ OEMDRIVERS and contains the inf and System32 folders. This change is currently only visible if the function is activated before the first boot during a new installation, as Albacore did.

For me, the folder was then created and printer drivers were also moved into the folder. At Albacore, the VMWare drivers have also moved to this folder. Microsoft is really committed to the fact that only native things are placed in the System32 folder. Everything else will gradually be moved from the folder to another location.

It is also time that Microsoft began to dispose of and reorganize the legacy issues. Because nothing serious has been done in this regard since Windows XP. If Microsoft adopts this new arrangement in Windows 10 21H2, it will really finally be a version with a lot of changes.

If you want to try it out yourself in the Insider:

  • Download and unzip ViVeTool
  • In the folder above, start the File -> PowerShell -> PowerShell (administrator) tab
  • Enter cmd Enter
  • Enter Vivetool.exe addconfig 26920259 2 and press Enter
  • Perform an in-place upgrade. You can find an ISO here
