Windows 10 21H2, "Device Usage" Appears in Settings Page, what is it?


A new feature arrives in Windows 10. It allows you to optimize recommendations based on usage. Clearly, Microsoft works on profiles with the key tools and services based on how you plan to use your PC.

This project has been in test for a few months at Microsoft. Internal tests have been carried out through a new entry in "Settings". Called "Device Use", it offers different profiles in order to personalize recommendations on the operating system. This ranges from gaming to creation, including entertainment, school or even work.

This new entry in Settings has appeared among some users registered in the Windows Insiders program. It arrives through a Preview of 21H2 (Windows 10 Build 21337). Microsoft explains

“Get personalized suggestions through tools and services based on how you plan to use your device.”

A first screenshot reveals a simple approach.

This novelty “Device usage” includes two aspects.

The first is the possibility of leaving Windows 10 to determine the PC profile on its own. This implies monitoring and analysis of the various activities undertaken by the user. The other approach is to choose a profile from six different activities. The choice can be multiple.

For example, if "game" is selected the OS is supposed to show new games. Likewise, “entertainment” should put forward tools and services for consuming videos, browsing the Web, and connecting to social media.

At the moment all this is not yet very clear. We do not know where these famous personalized suggestions will land. At the same time, the OOBE may be enriched with this new page. The OOBE is the contraction of Out Of the Box Experience. This is the welcome screen when you boot Windows 10 after it is installed. It allows the first settings (account creation, network connection, etc.)

The “Device usage” service should be closely monitored because it nevertheless takes on an obvious advertising nature. In addition, being in relation to uses, this advertising will be targeted and personalized according to personal activities in a private or professional context.
