Rocket Lake-S and Adaptive Boost, more than 5 GHz on all cores!

On the occasion of the presentation of its 11th generation, Core Intel introduced a new frequency profile, the Adaptive Boost. What is it about? How does this technology work? What is its purpose?

Rocket Lake-S and Adaptive Boost technology

After Turbo Boost 2.0, Turbo Boost 3.0, or even Velocity Boost we now have ABT. The ABT is the contraction of Adaptative Boost Technology. It applies to all cores under certain power and cooling conditions. Clearly, a particular environment must be available for it to be able to take action.

This advancement will not be available with all Rocket Lake-S processors. It only concerns the high-end chips of the Core i9 K and KF family. The letter K refers to the presence of an unlocked multiplier and the letter F to the absence of an onboard graphics solution (iGPU). So concretely the ABT will only concern the Core i9-11900K and the Core i9-11900KF.

These two processors are able to offer 5.3 GHz on two cores thanks to the Thermal Velocity Boost technology. However, their temperature must be below 70 ° C. Otherwise the Turbo boost 3.0 provides 5.2 GHz if the temperature does not exceed 100 ° C. If three or four cores are operated, a frequency of 5.1 GHz is possible using TVB (Thermal Velocity Boost). The ABT then kicks in by allowing a frequency of 5.1 GHz across all eight cores if power and cooling allow.

Clearly, for a maximum of four cores, we remain at the TVB level, but for more than four 5.1 GHz cores are possible which is interesting compared to the current 4.9 and 4.8 GHz.

Adaptive boost is a technology internal to the processor. It is part of its boost mechanisms. This is not an overclocking, so the processor warranty is not affected.

In this regard, Asus is deploying several new BIOSes allowing this multi-core turbo frequency technology to be unlocked for the Core i9 Rocket Lake-S.
