Microsoft released workaround for Windows 10 activation errors

Microsoft has provided a workaround with which those affected can now resolve the activation error "0xC004C003" of Windows 10 devices. The error occurred occasionally after the monthly "C" update in January 2021.

Only a few users who had installed the preview update KB4598298 and who were using one of the new Windows 10 versions 2004 or 20H2 were affected by this. The activation error "0xC004C003" is one of the known problems of the patch at that time. According to the online magazine Bleeping Computer, Microsoft has now responded to the problems and after weeks provided an explanation and help on the Windows support websites.

Error code 0xc004c003

It says, "This problem can occur if you try to activate the operating system with a Digital Product Key (DPK) for OEM Activation 3.0 (OA3)," according to Microsoft. The error messages included the following explanation: "We cannot activate Windows on this device because you do not have a valid digital license or product key. If you think you have a valid license or key, please select the option below Troubleshooting. Error code 0xc004c003. " However, troubleshooting alone fails.

"Error 0xC004C003 occurs when a licensing code component tries to access a registry hive that cannot be properly accessed. A resulting 'Access Denied' error prevents the product key from being extracted correctly." The problem occurred primarily with users of one EDU version, but also with other versions.

Affected Windows 10 versions and editions are:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise, version 2004
  • Windows 10 Home, version 2004
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 2004
  • Windows 10 Education, version 2004
  • Windows 10 Pro Education, version 2004
  • Windows 10 Pro, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Enterprise version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Education, Version 20H2
  • Windows 10 start page, version 20H2
  • Windows 10 Pro Education, version 20H2

To work around this problem and successfully activate Windows 10, Microsoft does not recommend installing the problematic update KB4598291. Affected people who have incorrectly struggled with the deactivation of their Windows key should uninstall the update: "This problem does not occur on devices that are running the security version from January 2021 or an earlier version," says Microsoft.
