Kensington Announces New Windows Hello Fingerprint Reader

The accessories manufacturer Kensington has announced a successor to its Verimark fingerprint USB dongle. The new Verimark finger scanner supports sharing via Windows Hello for Windows desktop PCs.

The new Verimark and is no longer a small dongle but is a small box that is connected to the PC via a USB cable. A dongle is useful with a laptop, but the new Verimark is primarily designed for working on a desktop computer and therefore comes with a US cable over a meter long for connection. In addition, it can be placed anywhere on the desk like a mouse and other input devices.

With the new security accessories, Kensington is primarily targeting corporate customers - the fingerprint reader generally offers simple security access via biometric recognition for every Windows user, even if the PC does not support the feature by default due to the lack of hardware. At the announced price of 75 dollars in the US, this is still a very inexpensive helper that increases comfort and security on the PC. So far nothing has been learned about the start on the German market or the targeted price. In Germany, the new finger scanner can currently only be ordered for companies on request.

Windows Hello certified

The finger scanner is FIDO U2F-certified and FIDO2 WebAuthn-compatible and thus offers extended options for authentication. This includes, for example, passwordless single-factor authentication, dual- and multifactor authentication. Since Kensington has certified the new finger scanner Windows Hello, this now ensures seamless integration that brings the Hello login to every device with Windows 10 and is also compatible with other Microsoft services such as Office365, Azure, Outlook and many more.
