Google introduces Nest Hub 2 with clever functions and old hardware

Google Home Hub, later renamed Nest Hub, is essentially a control unit with a screen for the smart home. Now the Californian company has presented a successor, the second-generation Nest Hub can also be pre-ordered.

Google today (after numerous leaks) presented the second edition of the Nest Hub. In a press release, the company writes that the device will be available online from March 30, 2021. Pre-orders start immediately, the new Nest Hub is available in the Google Store and at Tink. The recommended retail price is 99.99 euros.

Practically nothing has changed from the outside, the design of the device is almost unchanged. The manufacturer accordingly highlights functionalities that have more to do with software or that are not necessarily recognizable at first glance. It is said that the new Nest Hub brings an additional third microphone for better hands-free use, and offers 50 percent more bass compared to the first generation.

Gesture control without a camera

In addition, there is a new gesture control that still works without a camera (Google does without it for privacy reasons) and works with Motion Sense. This technology can only detect movements, not bodies or faces. Nevertheless, music or videos can be controlled without touching the display.

Motion Sense, together with the integrated Soli Radar chip, makes it possible to analyze sleep and, if necessary, give tips on how to improve rest times. For this, the Nest Hub has to be close to where you sleep, a camera or a body-worn sensor is not required.

Technically, not much or nothing has changed: The second generation Nest Hub again has a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, which is operated by an ARM processor with four cores.
