AMD to launch its Radeon GPUs for RDNA-based cryptocurrencies

As NVIDIA did, AMD will launch its line of blockchain graphics cards, which come with RDNA architecture and the abbreviation "B" at the end of the naming. In principle, there will be 3: Radeon RX 5700 XTB, 5600 XTB and 5500 XTB, which will mainly focus on the hash rate.

Keep in mind that the classic RX 5700 XT was a "bombshell" in every way: it could fight with the RTX 2070 and its hash rate was very good. Considered the best price / performance / watt GPU for mining, it was in high demand on mining farms. Now, AMD is following the path of NVIDIA CMP with an upcoming release of the Radeon XTB.

Radeon RX 5700 XTB, 5600 XTB and 5500 XTB will be chosen

Sure enough, we “went back in time” to see an older graphics card launch, as RDNA hit the market in 2019. The leading GPU of the series was a mid-range RX 5700 XT that won the hearts of many for its great relationship price-quality. Of course, its launch was a bit starry, since it crashed and got quite hot in the beginning.

It seems that now it returns home, but slightly transformed and with a different task: mining cryptocurrencies. It is the RX 5700 XTB (B is for blockchain), which will be based on the RDNA architecture, like its smaller sisters.

The hash rate of the RX 5700 XT on Ethereum ranged between 54 and 56 MH / s, which is equivalent to the RTX 3070 or RX 6800 XT. On the other hand, the RX 5500 had a 128-bit bus and a bandwidth of 224 GB / s, which was a clear limit to mining cryptocurrencies.

Additionally, the RX 5500 XT had a 4GB variant that made it unsuitable for mining Ethereum because the DAG algorithm size was 4,117GB. Translated in plain English, it was not very profitable, nor was it worth it for ETH, although other cryptocurrencies such as KAWPAW could give some benefit.

In the case of the RX 5700 XT, it could yield an approximate profit of $ 5 a day per graphics card, even go up to more than $ 6 with overclock. On the other hand, the RX 5600 XT could reach a hash rate of 40 MH / s, which is not bad at all below the 300 €, which was the price of this range.

With this data, AMD has decided to prepare a range of graphics cards such as NVIDIA CMP, which will consist of 3 GPUs :

  • Radeon RX 5500 XTB
  • Radeon RX 5600 XTB
  • Radeon RX 5700 XTB

Logically, it is expected that the hash rate of each one will be higher than the normal version because they were GPUs designed to play games. However, mining farms continue to opt for RIGs made up of NVIDIA RTX 3000, not to mention the RTX 3000 Mobile that comes in many notebooks.

Of course, AMD Radeon will have to work a lot because NVIDIA has already presented CMP, its range for cryptocurrencies. Not only that, but we will have 4 GPUs with a hash rate of up to 86 MH / s : 3 of them with Turing architecture, while one comes with Ampere.
