“When you don’t know what to watch, press it.” Netflix 'shuffle' play button likely to be introduced in the first half of this year

Not sure what to watch on Netflix? Netflix will pick it up for you.

According to Variety reports, Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings said in an earnings report on Tuesday that it will roll out a feature in the first half of 2021 that "plays content instantly at the touch of a button, even if you don't choose it." It is a concept similar to Google'sI'm feeling lucky” button.

Netflix's shuffle feature has been tested over the past few months, but it varies in format. It can randomly play an episode of one of the TV series users enjoy, a 'Play Anything' button has been added to the navigation bar, and more recently it has been displayed as a 'Shuffle Play' button on the home screen of a connected TV app.

Netflix's form of shuffle play isn't clear yet, but it doesn't seem to be completely random. Variety reported last year that content is played back on Netflix's powerful recommendation engine. This means that if you press the 'shuffle' button, the content promoted on the Netflix home screen can be played.

However, the shuffle option is expected to help in moments when it's difficult to decide what to watch on Netflix. This is also going back to the days of holding a remote control in front of a TV and moving channels. It refers to an interesting "rejection" or alternative to the "on demand" revolution that began in the 1980s.

In any case, you will see a shuffle play button in the Netflix app in the near future.
