What is the difference between the Snapdragon 870 and 865? "Wi-Fi 6E support is the key"

About a month after the Snapdragon 888 was released, Qualcomm decided to revisit its previous Snapdragon 865 and release it as an upgraded Snapdragon 870. The only difference is Wi-Fi 6E.

In conclusion, the newly released Snapdragon 870 is a speedy version of the original Snapdragon 865. Qualcomm has brought together several partners, including Plus, to approve and introduce new chips, and announced that devices equipped with the Snapdragon 870 will be released within this quarter.

It's not uncommon to come up with an existing processor. Last year's Snapdragon 865 Plus is an example of Qualcomm's first changes to the Snapdragon 865. The 865 Plus boosted the Cryo CPU clock speed and the Adreno 650 GPU. In contrast, the 870 hits between 3.1GHz and 3.2GHz. According to Qualcomm, this is the only difference between the two products.

In some ways, it certainly is. According to the product documentation provided by Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 870 is exactly the same as the Snapdragon 865 Plus. That means, like the Snapdragon 865 Plus, the 870 also has a Snapdragon X55 5G modem. Qualcomm classifies the entire package of CPU and modem as 'Snapdragon X55 5G platform'.

However, the Snapdragon 865 Plus supports the Snapdragon Wi-Fi/Bluetooth model, FastConnect 6900, which is different from the 870 using FastConnect 6800. This is because Wi-Fi 6, which is in charge of the 6GHz band liberalized by the US government last year, and creates the third high-speed communication bandwidth, such as 2.4GHz and 5GHz, as mentioned above, was omitted.

Last year, Qualcomm unveiled a family of mesh network chipsets that use Wi-Fi 6E as a 'clean backhaul', especially without being affected by other devices that access the 6GHz band. Therefore, there is a possibility of avoiding the overload of mesh network backhaul by subtracting Wi-Fi 6E from the Snapdragon 870, but it is not clear at this point, and Qualcomm has not heard a reply.

The Snapdragon 870 is supplied to several companies such as Motorola, OnePlus, Oppo, iQOO, and Xiaomi. There is no company that has yet announced a new smartphone with the Snapdragon 870, so it seems that it is in the development stage.
