This is how Windows 10's dark mode could evolve with Sun Valley

The dark mode is something that many of us like. Whether on our favorite website, on the mobile or in the operating system, this configuration allows us to change the classic colors, light and white, for other darker tones. This mode is usually used at night, or when we are in front of screens with little light, since they help us relax our eyes. Windows 10 has, for several versions, its own dark theme. Although the truth is that it leaves a lot to be desired, it is the worst of all. Fortunately, this is going to change very soon.

The dark theme of Windows 10 is inconsistent. This means that, right now, when we activate this mode there are elements of the system (such as the search box) on which the new appearance does not apply. The same is true for other elements of the system, such as context menus, pop-up menus, property windows, etc. In addition, the color scheme of this Windows mode is too dark, and, contrary to what happens with the dark mode of, for example, macOS, Windows is ugly, forced.

WinUI will define the new dark mode of Windows 10

WinUI is a set of rules, created by Microsoft, with which to define the standard appearance of the operating system and of all the programs that we have installed in it. Broadly speaking, the main characteristics of this standard are to prioritize performance and give the user control over the customization of appearance.

Little by little, this new standard is becoming more and more integrated into the operating system. And now, with the launch of Sun Valley already in mind, Microsoft is beginning to experiment with different variations of its dark mode in order to create a unified look.

The first thing we will see will be how this dark mode fully extends to all elements of the operating system. Starting with the contextual menus that appear when you right-click on any element of the operating system. In addition to being dark, these new menus will also finally have rounded corners as part of the new Fluent Design.

WinUI will seek to achieve a much greater balance in the default colors of the dark theme, bringing them to all items on the desktop, to all programs and, finally, offering the dark mode that users deserve and expect.

When will it arrive

At the moment, these changes in the dark mode are in the testing phase. Only Windows 10 Insider users who are already testing Sun Valley builds (the DEV channel) can begin to see the first signs of the changes. Sun Valley will not reach users until well into fall 2021, so there is still time to have it all between us.

What can happen is that Microsoft takes advantage of the launch of the spring 2021 update, Windows 10 21H1, to test the new dark contrasts in some elements of the system, such as the search engine.

For now, Microsoft has not made any statements about its plans and intentions, so we will have to wait longer to see how this dark mode looks in the end.
