Sony unveils displays that will replace green screens in movies

Just ahead of CES 2021 next week, Sony Electronics announced new modular displays based on Crystal LED technology for professional applications such as "virtual production" of cinema.

Announced displays and B-C series possess anti-glare and a brightness of 1800 cd / m2. All displays are equipped with an "X1 for Crystal LED" processor, which can reproduce high dynamic range video at up to 120 frames per second. Stereoscopic 3D is also optionally supported. What's also great is that the displays do not have fans, which will ensure silence on the set. The price of the announced displays has yet to be revealed. Their main feature is modularity - by combining several, you can create large video walls.

These displays can be used in place of green screens during video content production. By the way, the green screen itself is used to separate the actors from the background during compositing (one of the stages of the final production) and place them using visual effects on virtual scenes. However, it is necessary to think in advance and set lighting that would correspond to the prepared scene, as well as apply additional visual effects to hide the use of the green screen. It happens that a green halo can persist on the contours of objects, as well as cast a tint on their surface. At the same time, the use of displays on the set, such as those presented by Sony, avoids these problems, plus the actors are able to see in advance the intended environment. In this, by the way,

Similar displays were used for filming "The Mandalorian" and "Midnight Sky". For the production of The Mandalorian, Industrial Light & Magic worked with Epic Games to develop special display panels.
