How to avoid Conexant ISST sound cards issue post Windows 10 20H2 update

Windows 10 updates have always been a problem. Either for one reason or another, every time Microsoft releases a new version of Windows 10, every 6 months, users appear who cannot install it, for various reasons. And although it is true that these problems have been greatly reduced, there are still a large number of users who find it impossible to install the latest versions of the operating system. And this is what is happening, once again, to users with Conexant ISST sound cards.

Windows 10 20H2 is the latest version of the operating system to date. Microsoft released this update last fall as a minor update to the May 2020 Update focused on fixing bugs and improving various aspects of the system, with very superficial news. However, despite being a minor update, this has not been free of problems, and users unable to install it on their computers.

Compatibility issues with Conexant ISST drivers

Microsoft has been investigating problems related to the Conexant ISST sound drivers, which are very common in notebooks for a long time. Specifically, the company began to detect problems in May 2020, when the 2004 version of Windows 10 saw the light of day. However, it was not until the arrival of 20H2 that these problems have worsened.

The problem lies in a conflict with the compatibility restrictions associated with the Conexant ISST Audio and Conexant HDAudio drivers. These drivers can be found in the "Sound and video controllers and game devices" section of the device manager. The libraries that cause conflict are all those numbered from uci64a96.dll to uci64a231.dll and correspond to version 7.231.3.0, or lower, of the driver.

The solution, apparently, is simple: that the manufacturer updates the drivers to make them compatible with the newer versions of Windows. However, as this does not happen, it has had to be Microsoft who has provided a small solution to these problems.

Update Windows 10 without driver problems

The first thing Microsoft recommends is to contact the manufacturer, OEM, of the laptop to see if there are new versions of the drivers available. We can also do it by hand from the manufacturer's website, or search for them using programs to update drivers such as IObit Driver Booster.

If there are new versions of the drivers available we must download them as soon as possible. Once installed, we will try to update the PC again (from Windows Update) to see if the problems have disappeared.

Microsoft, for its part, since January 14, 2021, is reducing the protection to allow some affected computers to be updated ignoring these problems. However, the media creation tool, or the Windows Update "download and update" button, will not be used to force the update. It is better to wait for the problem to fix itself and the update will automatically reach everyone.

If we do not want to, or cannot wait any longer, we can force the update with the media creation tool, although at our own risk. If something goes wrong during the update, Windows will revert the changes and revert to the previous state. And if something doesn't work after updating ourselves, we can always go back to the previous version within 10 days of updating.
