Global smartphone rankings shuffle: Apple soars, Huawei plunges, Xiaomi ranks third

Today, the two authoritative market research agencies IDC and Canalys successively released the latest reports. The data details of the two parties are different, but they all point to the strong promotion of the iPhone 12, Apple will return to the world's first throne in the fourth quarter of 2020, and Xiaomi will firmly occupy third place.

Canalys data shows that in the fourth quarter of 2020, global smartphone shipments reached 359.6 million units, a slight decrease of 2% year-on-year. Apple sold the largest number of iPhones in history during the quarter, with sales of 81.8 million units, an increase of 4% over the same period last year.

Samsung ranked second with 62 million units shipped, a 12% drop. Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo entered the top five, each gaining share from Huawei (including Honor), which is plagued by sanctions.

Among them, Xiaomi increased 31% to 43.4 million units, Oppo increased 15% to 34.7 million units, and Vivo shipped 32.1 million units, an increase of 14%.

Huawei (including Honor) ranked sixth in the fourth quarter of 2020, with 32 million smartphones shipped. This is also the first time it has fallen out of the top five in the world in six years.

Canalys analyst Vincent Thielke said: "iPhone 12 is very popular. Apple has an advantage over competitors in 5G. Due to the pandemic, air freight costs continue to rise. The power plug is omitted from the iPhone retail box, thereby reducing weight. And size, greatly improving logistics efficiency."
