The DJ, music producer, and singer SOPHIE, collaborator of great artists and transgender activist, died at dawn this Saturday in Athens, at the age of 34.

The well-known artist died at her home in the Greek capital, after a sudden accident, according to her team in a statement in which they asked for respect and privacy for the family and their followers.

“SOPHIE was a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists of the last decade. Not just because of her clever productions and creativity, but because of the message and visibility he achieved. An icon of liberation, ”they stated in the statement.

Born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, Sophie Xeon (Wiki) stayed in the background of the industry while launching successful collaborations with Madonna - along with whom she wrote the 2015 single "Bitch I'm Madonna", Lady Gaga, Diplo, Charli XCX, or Vince Staples.

In 2018 she released her debut album “Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides”, marked by her transgender identity, which earned her a Grammy nomination in the category of Best Dance / Electronic Album and dozens of favorable reviews from critics and the public.

Her groundbreaking productions are grounded in pop, trance, and underground music, mixing them with twisted and disorienting waveforms that make her sound instantly recognizable and in high demand.

Her debut album, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, in 2018, explored questions of identity, nonconformity, and reinvention, while also expanding her sound with longer tracks. "Crossing the boundaries of pop music and pursuing transcendence, Sophie achieves the rare feat of making difficult, abstract electronic music that hits you right in the heart," wrote the prestigious British magazine NME in a four-star review.

The album was later nominated for a Grammy for best electronic and dance music album.

French pop group Héloïse Letissier, aka Christine and the Queens, spearheaded the tributes to the late star, whose full name was Sophie Xeon, describing her as a "stellar producer", "a visionary" and "a trailblazer."

"She rebelled against the narrow and normative society being an absolute triumph, as an artist and as a woman," she wrote on Twitter.

Japanese singer Rina Sawayama called Sophie an "icon." "The world and our community have lost a beautiful soul," he tweeted.

"Thank you for the creations you left us in this Heartbroken world," added Welsh electronic musician Kelly Lee Owens.

"What sad news about Sophie's passing," offered DJ and producer Erol Alkan.
